Dentistry is no longer just a case of filling and extracting teeth. Nowadays, many people turn to dentistry as a way of improving their appearance, much as they would use cosmetic surgery or even a new hairstyle.
Cosmetic treatments include tooth coloured fillings, veneers, inlays, crowns and tooth whitening.
Tooth Whitening
Teeth become discoloured by age, tobacco use, certain medications, and staining foods and drinks such as tea, coffee and red wine. Simple brushing, even with special toothpastes, can fail to brighten a dull smile. Tooth whitening can be a highly effective, yet very simple way, of lightening the colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. A bright smile boosts your confidence and makes you feel better about yourself.
We recommend the home bleaching technique:
- With Home Bleaching the dentist takes impressions at your first visit in order to make a mouthguard. The impressions will then be sent to a dental laboratory. Once the completed mouthguard is returned to us your dentist will start the treatment which you must then continue at home. This will mean placing a whitening solution into the mouthguard and wearing, probably overnight for 1-4 weeks, until the desired shade is reached
Whitening can only lighten your existing tooth colour and depends on the original shade of your teeth. In order to sustain the lightening effect, booster courses may be required at a later date. Although it is not effective on dentures, crowns or veneers, these can be replaced after to match your new brighter teeth.
